API in Brief

Basics

Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. (API) is a shadow corporation that has protected humanity from the supernatural forces in the world since the Black Plague. They have their hands in just about every facet of human life and have personally stopped the world from ending more times than one would guess. Humans make up the vast majority of employees and agents to fight against evil supernatural forces, other beings also inhabit our planet.

In this world, Demons live side-by-side with humanity. By definition, demons are either humans that have been altered in some fashion (such as vampires or mutants) or they are beings from other dimensions entirely that have traveled to Earth for a multitude of reasons.

Together, they work to protect the world on a daily basis.

Setting

The world of API very much like our own. However, API has developed technology outside of what is commonly known in order to protect the world. This includes new technology in the fields of medicine, robotics, and computers. With these advancements, they equip their agents with the tools they need to fight against the end times.

The dark underworld is filled with magic, demons, and the new addition of cybernetics, but their existence is unknown to normal people. That is API’s job after all. It is a world where knowing the secret alley to the a local street doctor could land you a cybernetic hand transplant or where a man in a business suit can walk into your favorite herb shop and sanction them for selling wolfs bane.

Mood

API is a game of modern horror, with a twist of humor. No game should have complete dreariness and neither should it be like a cartoon. The “things” fought in API are not kind… they wish to destroy Earth for one reason or another and it is the agents’ job to stop these activities by any means necessary. People’s lives and the entire dimension are at risk. But there is a bit a humor in everything. It could be that the monster inflicting horrible terror is no larger than your shoe, a certain scepter wielded by the enemy has a phallic shape to it, or that the giant fish demon can hide himself with just a trench coat and a fedora. These kinds of things add to a humorous tone to the game, but keep in mind that the horror remains.

Dynamic Gaming System

The DGS uses a single 1d20 for all its rolls, including all skill, resistance, and combat rolls. You only need one die to play this game! All basic mechanics essentially use the Attribute + Skill + 1d20 roll mechanic. However, combat attributes (bonuses to Strike, Parry, Dodge, etc.) are garnered from their attributes and combat skills. Combat itself is fully immersive, making combat a fun and exciting addition to the game, instead of a hassle like in most other RPGs.

Player Characters

Players take on the role of API agents, and can play as a Human, one of the various Demon races, or a Spirit. In the coming weeks, each of these races will be previewed and discussed in detail.
